Lawrence had done a lot of dirty work in his day, but tonight had been the pits. Literally.

He’d arrived back at Jo Jo’s after closing. He was paying five hundred a day to crash in the apartment over the bar, but that didn’t include the use of the shower. She’d wanted four times the daily rate on seeing—and smelling—him after his trip to the cemetery, and he’d gladly paid it. It was necessary—and the money he’d been promised had made it worth it.

He wasn’t surprised to get a call, long after the bar had been closed. “Lawrence.”

It was the distorted voice again. “Did you do it?”

“Yeah, yeah.” He shook his head. “When I get the other half, I’m done. I’ve got plenty of work, and none of it’s as loony as what I did tonight.”

“You disappoint me, Lawrence. You never used to question orders.”

“What do you mean? Who are you?” Lawrence glared at the receiver before putting it back to his face. “Tell me or I’m out!”

“Touchy, touchy. But fine. I guess we can dispense with this now.”

The next voice Lawrence heard was not distorted—and it nearly caused him to drop the phone.

“Hello, Lawrence. It’s your old pal, Jack. Miss me?”

“Joker?” The big man sputtered. “B-but how?”

“The healing power of laughter strikes again, my friend. And with your help, so will I!”
